Word Counter

This counter splits text on whitespace (spaces, tabs, and newlines), which matches the standard definition used by most word processors including Microsoft Word and Google Docs. Hyphenated words like "well-being" count as one word. Numbers, symbols, and abbreviations each count as one word if surrounded by whitespace. The count may differ slightly from specialized tools that handle contractions or punctuation differently.

Reading time is estimated at 200 words per minute, which is a commonly cited average for adult reading comprehension. Silent reading speed varies from about 150 to 400+ words per minute depending on the reader, the complexity of the material, and whether the goal is skimming or careful reading. Speaking time uses 130 words per minute, a typical pace for clear, measured speech.

Characters with spaces counts every character in the text including space characters, tabs, and newlines. Characters without spaces excludes all whitespace, counting only letters, numbers, punctuation, and symbols. The without-spaces count is useful when character limits apply to non-whitespace content, such as in some SMS or database fields.
