Frequently Asked Questions

How do you calculate annual salary from hourly wage?
Multiply your hourly rate by the number of hours you work per week, then multiply by 52 (weeks in a year). For example, $25/hour × 40 hours/week × 52 weeks = $52,000 per year. This assumes you work all 52 weeks with no unpaid time off. If you take unpaid vacation, subtract those weeks from 52 first.
What is FICA tax?
FICA (Federal Insurance Contributions Act) tax funds Social Security and Medicare. For 2024, employees pay 6.2% of wages for Social Security (on income up to $168,600) and 1.45% for Medicare (no income limit), for a combined 7.65% employee share. Your employer matches this amount. Self-employed individuals pay both the employee and employer share — a combined 15.3% — but can deduct half of it on their tax return.
How much of my salary will I take home after taxes?
Your take-home pay depends on your gross salary, filing status, deductions, and state taxes. As a rough estimate, someone earning $60,000/year filing as Single might take home around 75–80% after federal income tax and FICA. Higher earners pay a higher effective rate. This calculator provides an estimate of federal taxes only — your actual take-home will be lower if your state has an income tax, and higher if you have pre-tax deductions like 401(k) contributions or health insurance premiums.
